How to Find and Trace Water / Gas Supply Pipelines Buried Underground or In Wall

The buried pipes inside walls or underground are commonly used in modern houses nowadays. We can classify these types of applications as following.

  • Underfloor pipes. It is usually used for making a piping network under the floor, where you can flow a water with a source of pumping with a suitable pressure, this water is normally hot in the winter for warming. This is considered as a wet underfloor heating system.

  • Underground pipes. The underground pipes include the pipes buried under garden floors for irrigation, the gas supply pipes for heating and cooking, and the tap water pipes for daily use.

Some other utilities also use a buried pipes like auxiliary branches of sewer lines, television and communication cables, and electrical supply lines.

  • In-wall pipes. It may be a heating pipes network or a branch of the floor heating itself, also the gas lines may have a branches inside walls to supply the kitchen use and sometimes specific gas heaters.

This network should be away enough of the electric network cables and communication cables to avoid direct contacting with it in case of water leaks accidents.

The Scenarios That People Need To Find And Track An Underground Water or Gas Supply Pipe

There are many scenarios that you will need to trace your pipes, either inside walls, underground floors, gardens or even in your official work tasks, if your work is related to a construction company.

  • You may need to add a communication network cable under your garden floor, so you need to know exactly the track of the old pipes to avoid damaging it.
  • You may need to install a new irrigation system pipes and its control cables or even do some maintenance to the existing one. All this work should avoid any existent pipes under the garden.
  • You may feel a weakness in your warming system in the winter so you need to check if there is any blockage in the system.
  • If you suspect that there is a leakage inside the walls. In order to fix that leak, you will need to find the exact location of the pipeline in your house.
  • Sometimes you need to make a hole in your walls with a private drill to hang a family or a natural scene photo, or anything else.

Detect An Underground Water or Gas Pipeline using Noyafa NF826 Underground Cable Locator

Metallic pipelines detecting

To detect underground water or gas metallic pipeline use the following steps

  1. The pipeline to be detected should be a metallic material.
  2. Note that the resistance between the detected pipe and the soil or the wall should be large enough to maintain the generated wave from the transmitter.
  3. Connect the positive wire of the transmitter to the pipe end using metallic wire, then connect the negative pole to an active ground (you can make a good ground pole using a rod penetrating the soil about 10 CM depth if possible).
  4. Power on both the transmitter by pressing long press on the power key here the display will initialize and the buzzer will run twice.
  5. Press long press on the receiver power button to start tracing the pipe.
  6. The transmitter will generate an electromagnetic wave through the metallic material of the pipe, this wave will generate a radio wave around the path of the pipe, where the receiver part can sense it through the soil or through the wall.

  7. To set the transmitter signal level, press the key (level set) shortly, then use the up and down arrows to select between three levels of signal, after selecting the desired level, press (level set) again to confirm this setting.
  8. Usually try to detect your pipe with the lower level, but if it is not enough to your application change into the higher level.

  9. The transmitter has 6 different signal codes, you can select between them using the (code set) button shortly, then selecting between them using up and down arrows. Then press (code set) again to confirm the code setting.

  10. The receiver will work on its maximum automatic sensitivity when it is powered on, this helps for fast detection of the pipe location, but to detect in higher precession, turn it to manual sensitivity mode through (menu) button, then use the down arrow to reduce the sensitivity, so the receiver will detect the pipe in a narrow range, this means more accurate positioning.

Non-metallic pipelines detecting:

To find a blockage in a buried non-metallic pipe in a wall or underground use the following steps.

    1. Non-metallic pipes includes plastic pipes or PVC pipes used in water networks (non-conductive material).
    2. Use a spiral metallic tube (flexible) to insert it inside the pipes from the opening you can reach.
    3. Push the metallic spiral along the nonmetal tube as long as you can.
    4. Connect the transmitter positive end to the spiral, and connect the negative end to an earth connection wire.
    5. Use the receiver to detect the pipe track until the signal attenuates in a certain position, this means that there is a blockage in the tube in this place.
